        • Getting Started

Eliminating single-use plastic is a challenge - no doubt about that. However there are things we can all do reduce our plastic usage – remember ‘Progress not Perfection’ is key here. Here is a list of 6 ideas to help you get started or continue on your journey to reducing single-use plastic

          Refuse : Bottled water

Top up your refillable water bottles with delicious Scottish tap water drunk from a refillable bottle. It's far cheaper and better quality than bottled water. To help find businesses that will top up your bottles with tap water for free when you are on-the-go, download the 'Refill' app by going to www.refill.org.

Reduce : fresh fruit and veg in packaging

Visit local suppliers such as Bankhead Farm shop nr Cairneyhill and RC Fergusons Florists on East Port, who have a much greater plastic-free selection than the supermarket. RC Fergusons will also deliver to your door.

          Refuse : Plastic bags.

Remember to always carry your own reusable bags - get into the habit of leaving them in your car or somewhere so they don't get forgotten.

Try making your own reusable bag from an old t-shirt.

          Reduce : Crisp packets

Buy larger size 150g share bags of crisps and decant 25g portions (weight of a normal packet) into reusable containers and avoid 6 crisp packets, saving money along the way.

Reuse : empty ice cream or butter tubs

Use these to store food in the fridge rather than use clingfilm. This also saves money.

          Refuse : Plastic food packaging

Refill your own containers in Dunfermline's very own zero waste shop, Happy Earth Place. Products that can be refilled include shampoo, conditioner, handwash, rice, pasta, pulses, tea, coffee and many more.

Refuse : Straws in restaurants and bars.

When ordering, ask that your drink is bought to you without a straw. Many restaurants and pubs have now stopped using straws but it is always worth checking.
